Serving the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei is a central task of financial institutions in the region, said Pan Gongsheng, deputy governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the country's central bank.

Pan called for improvement in financial support to the integration of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) region at a conference in Tianjin on April 7, according to a statement on the official website of the PBOC. "Serving the country's major strategy is an important responsibility of financial institutions," he stressed.

They should increase financial support to important areas, including infrastructure, environmental protection, industrial upgrading, innovation and poverty relief, and provide long-term capital and green financing, he added.

Meanwhile, he urged the financial sector to "seize the major opportunities brought by the strategy of Jing-Jin-Ji coordinated development" for its own development.

Beijing, home to nearly 22 million people, is trying to curb population growth and relocate "non-capital functions" to its neighbor Hebei Province as part of efforts to curb pollution and congestion. In 2015, central authorities approved a guideline for integrated development of the Jing-Jin-Ji region.

The PBOC statement also said that the recent decision to establish the Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province, an important move to advance Jing-Jin-Ji development, was also discussed at the conference.

Also attended are officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, China Securities Regulatory Commission, as well as those from Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

The National Association of Financial Market Institutional Investors signed a strategic cooperative agreement on boosting the Jing-Jin-Ji development with PBOC branches and financial bureaus in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.
