The year of 2015 saw breakthroughs in international cooperation for China's publishing sector as China-themed books sold well globally and transfers of book copyright surged to an historical high.
Telling Chinese stories and making the Chinese voice more widely heard via books is helping the world to know about China and properly understand it. The publishing sector is also helping Chinese culture to go overseas and establish a glamorous presence of the international stage.
The book that reflects Chinese President Xi Jinping's views on governance "Xi Jinping: The Governance of China" has been selling well worldwide and 5.37 million copies have been distributed in more than 100 countries and regions, becoming the best-selling Chinese book in 2015.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger described the book as "an eloquent, thoughtful window into a leader, a country, and a millennia-old civilization". Robert Lawrence Kuhn, a U.S. writer and China expert, said "Xi's book emphasizes improving people's lives, reform, rule of law and Party building," which are key aspects of the president's approach to governance.
At the BookExpo America (BEA) held in May last year, China displayed up to 10,000 books, in which 2,085 were published in foreign languages. The video product "Century Wave, Chinese Dream" was launched simultaneously in nine language editions - English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional).
This well explains the meaning and essence of the Chinese Dream from all aspects. The English editions of the "Interpreting the CPC" series, meanwhile, explain the ideas and approaches behind the CPC's governance of China. The latest three books "Big Power's Responsibility," "China's Choice" and "Chinese Currency and the World" are recognized as vital windows to understanding of contemporary China.
Each year, China attends various book fairs across the world, including those held in Frankfurt, Paris, London, Moscow, New York, New Delhi, Tokyo and Rio Janeiro. At home, the Beijing International Book Fair has also grown into an important international event after 20 yeas' development.
