Liu Qibao, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, called all Party publicity officials to make a greater effort in connecting outstanding traditional Chinese culture with modern times at a national meetingheld on Jan. 5 in Beijing.

Focus should be put on traditional cultural values that are useful for solving present problems, conducive for social progress and able to represent the spirit of the time, Liu said.

For instance, in schools, students should learn outstanding traditional cultural values so as to develop a good character, while in rural and urban construction, elements of traditional culture should be preserved and widely spread.

Publicity officials should also work hard to ensure stories about China are told and Chinese voices are heard abroad, Liu said.

The meeting was also attended by Liu Yunshan, a member of the standing committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong, who is also a member of the standing committee.
