Policy briefing links gov’t to the public

The State Council Information Office (SCIO) held 39 regular media briefings on major policies during the year.

The briefings, first held on Jan. 16, 2015, are normally held every Friday morning for 30-60 minutes at the SCIO Briefing Hall. Usually, each briefing invites more than 30 reporters, 20 of them being from foreign media outlets.

The briefings focus on the general work of the Chinese government and work conferences of the State Council.

Among the 39 briefings during the year, 18 were centered on the economy, finance and industrial development, including finance reform in 2014, real economic development, the macro-economic situation, reform of the economic system in 2015, construction of the deposit insurance system, high speed broadband network expansion and “Internet Plus” improvement.

Topics regarding social development, education, science, culture, sports, public health, and ensured living standards were also touched upon, such as the reform of county-level public hospitals, state-subsidized student loans, critical illness insurance and the compulsory education budget.

Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, ministries of education, science and technology, industry and information, civil affairs, finance, environmental protection, agriculture, commerce, housing and urban-rural development as well as the Bank of China participated in the briefings and introduced their work to the public.

According to Guo Weimin, vice minister and spokesman of the SCIO, the briefings provided background information and interpretation concerning the key policies and targets, so as to strengthen awareness of the work and transparency of the Chinese government and other governing bodies.
