Liu Qibao, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, encouraged Chinese calligraphers to keep with times and strive to exceed their own expectations when addressing a meeting of Chinese calligraphers on Dec. 7 in Beijing.
When learning the basic rules and aesthetic ideals of the traditional Chinese art, calligraphers should also do their best to create prominent, innovative works, Liu said at the opening ceremony of the Seventh National Congress of the China Calligraphers Association.
Calligraphy is a popular leisure activity among Chinese people, and calligraphers should make their works suitable to the tastes of common people, Liu said.
Calligraphy has developed in China for more than 3,000 years. It is an important aspect of traditional Chinese culture. Through the use of a brush to write Chinese characters, a calligrapher can express his or her aesthetic ideals, education, thoughts, feelings, personality and temperament.
